Cardiff Bus came to the rescue of local residents recently after they had to be evacuated following an explosion below their flats.

In quick response to an explosion at a Co-Op in Llanrumney, Cardiff Bus provided an emergency bus and driver to transport 40 residents of the above flats to safety.

At 4am last Friday morning, thieves used acetylene cylinders to gain access to the supermarket and cash machine, resulting in a loud explosion and causing significant damage.

Residents of the flats above the Co-Op were evacuated as a precautionary measure. As part of the EVAC Cardiff Group, a multi-agency partnership working together to respond to any major incidents or emergencies in Cardiff, Cardiff Bus helped to transport 11 families from the crime scene to a place of safety whilst emergency services attended the incident.

Operations and Commercial Director Gareth Stevens said: “In what was a distressing event for all involved, we are extremely thankful that we were able to rescue the families residing in the flats above the Co-Op in Llanrumney and transport them to a safe place.

“EVAC Cardiff is a fantastic initiative that allows businesses across Cardiff to come together and be prepared to respond to any incident that may occur in the city. We will continue to provide our services to the group and whilst we hope that incidents such as this won’t occur again, we will always be on hand to provide any help that we can to the residents of Cardiff.”
